She was not going to write a love song just cos we asked for it, she informed us... but the Love Song Californian newcomer Sara Bareilles delivered anyway proved to be the perfect demonstration of affection all the same. At least as far as New Zealand radio was concerned.
 Based on a year-end tally of the collected logs of every major contemporary music station in New Zealand, the Grammy-nominated breakthrough hit tops this year's RadioScope 2008 annual charts, heading off last year's local winners OpShop by a narrow margin.
Love Song hit the airwaves right at the start of the year, climbing its way to #1 on the RadioScope100 by the second week of March and remaining there for seven weeks in a row. Driven initially by Pop radio, where it peaked at #2, it went on to become an Adult Contemporary / Easy Listening staple, topping the 2008 year-end AC Chart.
OpShop could not quite repeat the feats of 2007 when Maybe topped the end of year list, but they came very close with One Day. One of radio's biggest genuine cross-format hits, the song made the Top10 in Pop, Rock, AC and Easy Charts during the year. It not only tops the 2008 NZ Chart but was also the most-played song of the year on Easy Radio.
On Pop radio, it was Universal which ruled the roost claiming the top three songs of the year, Don't Hold Back by Aussies The Potbelleez coming in at #1.
Perenniel rock radio favourite sons Shihad delivered yet again in 2008, claiming the year's top spot with One Will Hear The Other.
On Urban radio, Chris Brown was indisputably the man of the moment. Not only did the 19-year-old have the most-played Urban songs of the year in With You, he also appears twice more in the year's Urban Top 10 (at #5 with the Jordin Sparks collaboration No Air, and #7 with Forever).
 Last but by no means least, the b.net stations ensured 2008 largely belonged to the locals. All but one of the year's Alternative Top10 were by New Zealand acts - just Aussie alt godfather Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds allowed entry to the exclusive club. And although there are some widely recognisable names in the final hit list, it was the newcomers who took out the top spots - Christchurch's Tiger Tones at #1 with I Love You But I Hate You But I'm Just Not Sure, followed closely by one of the discoveries of 2008 The Naked and Famous who score two places in the Top Four, and current international sensation Ladyhawke.
Over the course of 2008, RadioScope logged over 1.7 million radio spins representing roughly 88,000 hours of airtime. Just under 12,000 different songs. Performed by 5147 different artists.
And so long as the caffeine addiction and RSI-warding micro-pauses allow, we'll do it all again next year.
