The Happy Hippie Song That Played And Played
Posted by Paul Kennedy
Dec 17, 2009 at 01:11 PM
New Zealanders, Norwegians and Swedes. Whatever else we may have in common with the Nordic nations (nice fjords?), it seems we shared a 'thing' in 2009 for 32-year-old Jason Mraz. The Virginia-born singer went to #1 in all three countries this year with his guitar ballad I'm Yours and in this part of the world at least, we heard it on the radio. We heard it a lot.

Jason Mraz RadioScope crunches the numbers each week using airplay data from all the major radio and music TV stations in New Zealand. And 1.9 million spins and 64 gallons of coffee later, the definitive list of the year's most-played radio tunes reveals itself...

Topping the RadioScope 2009 end of year charts with 9837 logged spins, I'm Yours comfortably beats out Kings Of Leon at #2 with Use Somebody and the biggest homegrown radio hit of the year, Midnight Youth's All On Our Own at #3.

It was the AC and Easy stations which most devotedly took the song to their A-rotate hearts, coming in at #1 on both format charts for the year (see below). But Pop radio was not far behind, lifting the track Mraz describes as his "happy little hippie song" to #4 on their end of year tally.

It was a good year all round for Midnight Youth who claim the top two spots on the year's most-played local songs list, #1 with the aforementioned All On Our Own and #2 with The Letter, and a further two songs in the top 50 (Cavalry at #20 and Learning To Fall at #45).

As ever, Alternative radio provided the bastion for local sounds though. Nine of the year's top 10 songs were by Kiwi artists, James Duncan narrowly coming out ahead of Liam Finn and EJ Barnes to claim the top spot with The Cupboard's Bare.

See the tables below for the year's Top10 by format. And if that's not enough for you, click the 'download' links for the full lists in Excel form.
