J.Williams And Susan Boyle Top 2010

She may not have quite matched the mega-platinum sales of her debut album last year, but Susan Boyle still managed to repeat the her chart-dominating efforts in 2010. For the second year in a row, she tops the year-end album sales stats.

What may come as a surprise, however, is that it isn't her 2010 album The Gift, released in late November, that does it. That sits at #4 for the year. It's her debut, I Dreamed A Dream, which again tops the year-end chart, just as it did in 2009.

I Dreamed A Dream began the year at #1 and remained there for seven weeks this year. Other than for a short period late in the year, it has remained in the Top40 for most of 2010, re-entering the list again following the release of her follow-up effort in November.

Local lass Gin Wigmore had the second-biggest seller of the year with her Tui-winning album Holy Smoke. The album has not left the Top40 all year, spending an impressive 28 weeks this year inside the Top10. Teen sensation Justin Bieber rounds out the year's Top3 with My Worlds.

While Boyle dominated total album sales for the year, it was a different story in the digital market where newcomers Florence + The Machine had the biggest-selling digital album of 2010. Lungs heads off Gin and Eminem for digital honours.

On the Singles front, 2010 was a boom year for New Zealand artists. Seven of the 20 biggest-selling singles of the year were by New Zealanders, including the year's #1 - You Got Me by J.Williams and Scribe.

The platinum-selling song made its debut in mid-February, taking a further five weeks to make its way to the top of the Singles Chart where it stayed for four weeks. The song represented a milestone for rapper Scribe who chalked up his fourth #1 single, more than any other New Zealander.

Like the chart-topper, collaborations were the order of the day in 2010 with Eminem and Rihanna's Love The Way You Lie hook-up coming in at #2, followed by Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg's California Gurls at #3 and B.O.B. with Hayley Williams of Paramore with Airplanes at #4.

Although neither song makes the Top10 for the year, it was two local acts (one old, one new) which generated the biggest chart buzz of the year.

The Naked And Famous
broke new ground in June when their single Young Blood went straight to #1, the first tune to make a #1 debut in the last three years. The song spent two weeks on top and has since hit platinum status.

It was a 26-year-old former #1 hit that captured the attention of chart watchers earlier in the year though. The Dalvanius / Ngoi Pewherangi penned Poi E, performed by The Patea Maori Club from South Taranaki, made it all the way to #3 riding a resurgent wave generated by the box office hit movie Boy.

The song originally spent four weeks at #1 back in 1984 and has re-entered the charts several times over the decades since.
